Preservation

‘Once bitten, twice shy’

One of life’s ironic jokes
or a lesson that takes half
a lifetime to be fully understood.

In self defence, a crime
may be committed.
Protection of property
of life, limb and dignity.

Self preservation
wrapped vacuum tight
stifles both retch and emotions.

Memories buried
absorbing bruises in
a mental pin cushion.

The blow flies rise
buzzing angrily against
such selfish thoughts.

Then settle once more
on the dead dog’s corpse
lying crumpled on its side.

  1. ‘They’ have said it for ages … the best poetry seeps from the essence of our hurt. This is your best poetry (in my humble as always)! Your words boil in me … your ache, your confusion, your hopelessness, your many questions, your defences, your hot tears …

    ‘Self preservation
    wrapped vacuum tight
    stifles both retch and emotions.’

    … is precise & perfect.

    ‘The blow flies rise
    buzzing angrily against
    such selfish thoughts.’

    … is puss-filled, tortuous & guilt-driven.

And the whole of your poem is … it just ‘is’: a poetic chunk of truth with every word winning its place on merit … & leaving me sat here spilling with thought x

  2. Some of the most angsty poems are our strongest Abi, gritty, yes but your words in anger have more worth because of their honesty and integrity. I really feel this. Lovely xx

  3. Couldn’t have said it better than Peter and Shan. Imagry is incredibly evocative..This is a winner, Abs! :)) xoxo

  4. Strong raw writing – the imagery in this works perfectly – you capture the angst of being placed in a position where you need to preserve yourself so well here – it’s difficult to feel easy about self preservation
